Minerals and Their Meanings
Mineral, crystal, rock, precious gem, semi-precious gemstone? What’s the difference?
All solid minerals are crystals—that is, crystalline in structure. Rocks are made of two or more minerals. Gemstones are valuable minerals and rocks that are rare and durable, and have distinctive color or clarity. Organic substances like amber, coral and pearl are included in this category too. Historically, diamond, emerald, ruby and sapphire have been called the precious gemstones, while stones like amethyst, because they are more common, are deemed semi-precious.
When minerals are excavated, cut and polished, they become gems. Set in metal or strung as beads, they become jewelry. But, that’s not the end of the story. . .
Crystals are formed when the attractive force between molecules fuses them together in a distinct pattern. During this process, compressed electrical energy is trapped inside, creating the light that radiates from within each formation. That elemental light, in turn, transmits energy, and like snowflakes—which are crystals too, like salt and sugar…hey Sugar!—each crystalline structure is unique and emits its own individual vibration.
Those good vibrations emanating from crystals have been used for centuries to promote healing, provide protection and spiritual support, and to stimulate certain feelings and attributes such as harmony, courage and calm. Other organic materials—like bone and sandalwood—also contain these therapeutic properties. And it doesn’t matter at all if the crystals are in their natural state, cut, polished, or even dyed; their energy keeps shining through.
By learning about the distinctive properties of the gemstone beads Sugar uses —and their corresponding birthstone month and astrological sign where applicable—you can create the perfect personalized bracelet.
